This is the beginning of Week 2 of the Clarion UCSD Write-a-Thon. Some of you may have heard of the Clarion writing workshop, which has been running for 42 years and has turned out many bestselling and award-winning writers. Funding has been cut for the program this year, and so Clarion has responded by running a “Write-a-Thon” to ensure that the workshop can continue.

Every week, Clarion issues a challenge to the Write-a-Thon participants. This week’s challenge is for us writers to come up with a challenge for the Sponsor Challenge board, offering a minimum $5 Write-a-Thon donation to the writer who wins the challenge. Since I used to be one of the editors at Flash Me Magazine, I decided to do a flash fiction challenge.

Here are the rules:
- You must be participating in one of the Clarion Write-a-Thons (Clarion UCSD, Clarion West, or Clarion South)
- Your story should have a sf/f aspect
- Your story should be 1,000 or fewer words
- Your story should be submitted by email to kim (at) kimberlycreative (dot) com
- Your story should be in the body of your message — absolutely no attachments
- Your story should be e-mailed to me by midnight, Saturday July 10
- Your submission email should have the subject Flash Fiction Sponsor Challenge
- Please indicate whether or not you would like your entry to be posted on my web site (you may keep your entry private if you would like to submit it to a flash fiction market)
- Include your name, your Clarion Write-a-Thon page, and your personal web site with your entry

Here’s what you get:
- All entrants will be acknowledged in my blog with a link to their Write-a-Thon page and personal web site
- Unless you specifically request me to post them, or choose to post them on your own web site, your entries will remain private so that you may submit them to a flash fiction market if you choose
- I will choose up to three winners (dependent on how many entries I receive)
- I will select the winner(s) on Sunday July 11, and post the results on Monday July 12.
- I will sponsor the winner(s) for a total of $30 (see below)

The prize money will be divided according to how many winning entries are selected: $30 if there is only one winner; $10 and $20 if there are two; $5, $10, and $15 if there are three.

Good luck and have fun!
