Services
If you are an author looking for somebody to edit your manuscript prior to publication, please read a note to authors first.
Kimberly Creative Services offers you over ten years of experience in publishing, including proofreading and copyediting student papers, legal documents, and works of fiction as well.
Proofreading
This is what some people often are thinking of when they talk about editing. Strictly speaking, proofreading is reading hard copy against an original document to ensure that no new errors have been introduced into the new document and that any corrections marked have been included.Cold proofreading, what some people think of when they talk about editing, is correcting egregious spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors (as well as as errors in page layout and design) without the benefit of an original document for comparison.
Copyediting
Copyediting goes a step beyond proofreading to include checking your document for style, usage, consistency and accuracy. I have solid working knowledge of both Chicago and AP style, and have access to a variety of other style manuals as well. The copyediting process includes creating a style sheet to ensure internal consistency in your document. I always strive to preserve the author’s voice — after all this is your document, not mine. I may often make suggestions rather than making substantial changes — you will retain creative control over your work, and you can decide how best to implement any of those suggested changes.
As well as editorial services, I can offer a variety of other creative services to suit your needs:
Resume Review
The job market can be tough these days. You may have less than a minute to make your first impression when you send out your resume. Having someone with an objective eye polish up your resume can help to ensure that first impression is a good one. I can proofread your resume for typographical and grammatical errors, and help you decide what to say on your resume. You can create a resume that’s easily readable by potential employers and that will communicate to them the most important information about you as a potential employee.
Transcriptions
I can transcribe documents from legibly-written notes, from older printed documents, or from audio files. With a typing speed of 75 wpm, a high degree of accuracy, and a keen editorial eye as well, you can count on having your documents transcribed accurately and efficiently.
Digital imaging
Do you want to preserve grandmother’s old photographs? Digitize them to CD or DVD. Digitized photographs never crack, fade, or yellow. They’re also more portable than those old shoe boxes you’ve been using to store your photos. It’s also easier to share you favorite photographs with friends and family using digitized photos.
Digital imaging isn’t just for preserving family photographs though. You can also make digital images of important documents you need to save. Digitized documents are easier to manage than paper documents, and more compact. You can choose to digitize your documents as JPG or PNG images, or as PDF files.
OCR scanning
If you would rather digitize your document to an editable document, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software can preserve your documents in a Word, WordPerfect, or RTF document rather than as an image. OCR scanning is not always 100% accurate however. The clarity and typeface used in the original document can affect OCR accuracy greatly. The resulting document file must be careful proofread against the original paper document to correct any errors introduced through OCR scanning. On a Basic OCR scan, I scan your document and you can proofread it against the original document, making any necessary corrections yourself. On an Edited OCR scan, I will scan your document and proofread it against the original, making any necessary corrections for you. In some cases, I may suggest using our transcription service as a more cost-effective alternative.
